The Institute of Chin Affairs (ICA) and Mizoram University (MZU) are delighted to announce
\nthe launch of the Diploma in Burmese Language and Communication Skills with the support
\nof the International Development Research Centre (IDRC).<\/p>\n
Burmese is the official language of Myanmar, also known as Burma, and is spoken by
\napproximately two-thirds of the population. The study of Myanmar’s culture and politics is
\ninherently linked to its language. India shares a 1,600km border with Myanmar, and both
\ncountries have a rich heritage of linguistic, ethnic, and religious ties. This course is
\nrecommended for students who wish to explore Myanmar’s complex, multi-layered society
\nand collaborate with numerous local and international agencies in Myanmar and along the
\nborder. International non-governmental organizations (INGOs), religious organizations, civil
\nsociety groups, and foreign government bodies have a strong presence in Myanmar
\nresearch and programming. Proficiency in the Burmese language is a valuable asset for
\nthose seeking to join these agencies and provide support.<\/p>\n
The course will be led by Mr. Salai Za Lian Pum, a native Burmese speaker with a master’s
\ndegree in science. Mr. Lian is also fluent in the Mizo language, so the classes will be
\nconducted in both Mizo and Burmese.<\/p>\n
The course will run for two semesters, equivalent to one academic year, starting in
\nNovember 2023. Each semester will consist of 60 hours of classroom instruction and 30
\nhours of self-study. The course will equip students with an understanding of the Burmese
\nscript, vocabulary, and grammatical structure, as well as practice in speaking, conversation,
\nand writing. Students will have the option to enroll for two semesters to obtain a Diploma or
\nfor one semester to receive a Certificate.<\/p>\n
The course fee will be Rs. 1,000 (one thousand rupees) per semester, payable at the time of
\nregistration. The course fee includes study materials.<\/p>\n
